Project Spotlight: The Kitchen at #CRDCOxItWasMeantToBe

Everything about our Scotch Plains, NJ renovation and full-service interior design project was an absolute dream, and the kitchen is no exception. The custom details, warm tones, and design journey that brought us to the final days of installation and photoshoot were truly magical and an experience I'll forever cherish.

What started as a simple client request—one that initially received some pushback from the contractor—turned into the ultimate showstopping moment: a vertical shiplap backsplash paired with black soapstone countertops. It was a design detail we had never fully embraced at CRD&CO., but it perfectly demonstrates how our commitment to creating unique spaces, timeless moments, and thoughtful creativity continues to shape our work. Behind the range, a striking soapstone accent creates a beautiful focal point that grounds the entire kitchen, adding depth, contrast, and character. The combination of warm cabinetry, layered textures, and timeless materials feels both unexpected and classic, making it one of our favorite details throughout the entire home.

The open-concept first floor feels equally spacious and cozy, with the kitchen serving as the very first design moment you experience upon entering the home. It's warm, inviting, and practically asks you to sit down with a cup of coffee in the morning or share a glass of wine on a Saturday evening at home.

The goal for the layout was simple: create an elevated gathering space that could effortlessly support both everyday living and special occasions. This allowed us to design a sophisticated dining nook complete with glass cabinetry to showcase the formal dishes collected at our client's bridal shower. We layered in new decor details to make the space feel both personal and current while honoring pieces that already held meaning.

As you move through the kitchen, the island naturally invites you to gather and connect. One of my biggest rules of thumb when designing a kitchen—if the floor plan allows for it—is to avoid placing a sink in the island. The island should create flexibility within a home. It should function as an extension of the dining table, a breakfast spot before school, a place for afternoon homework sessions, or my favorite use of all: a beautiful spread of charcuterie, appetizers, and desserts when hosting family and friends.

Our oversized island, topped with beautiful Statuario Nuvo quartz and finished with custom edge detailing, does exactly that. The contrasting countertops and cabinetry selections seamlessly complement the custom Macadamia Nut cabinetry, creating a look that feels both timeless and inviting.

The open shelving nook was one of my favorite areas to style. It creates a beautiful opportunity to showcase collected glassware, fresh florals, and everyday essentials while remaining highly functional for weeknight meals and daily routines.

At the end of the day, this kitchen was always meant to be more than just a beautiful space. It's where recipes are made, meals are shared, homework gets completed, conversations linger a little longer, and everyday moments become the memories that make life feel so special.

Like so many spaces throughout Project: It Was Meant to Be, this kitchen is a reflection of intentional design and the people who call it home. It balances beauty and functionality, sophistication and comfort, proving that the most successful spaces are often the ones designed not just to be admired, but truly lived in.
