Schluter vs. Bullnose: Which One’s Right for Your Tile Project?

When it comes to tile projects, it’s the details that truly make or break the final look. You can have the most beautiful tile in the world, but if the edges aren’t finished properly, it will feel incomplete. One question I get all the time from clients is: Should we use Schluter or bullnose? Let’s break down the difference and what I typically recommend.

Bullnose tiles are those with a rounded, finished edge. They’ve been around for years and give a soft, timeless finish that blends seamlessly with your tile. They’re perfect for projects where you want everything to match, such as a classic subway tile backsplash or a clean shower niche. One thing to keep in mind is that not every tile comes with a bullnose option, especially newer, larger-format, or handmade styles.

Schluter, on the other hand, is a metal or PVC trim that caps off the edge of your tile. It comes in a variety of finishes including matte black, brass, stainless steel, and brushed nickel. Schluter trim gives your tile a clean, polished edge and works beautifully when a coordinating bullnose isn’t available. It’s durable, sleek, and great for busy spaces like family bathrooms and kitchens.

In my projects, I often use Schluter when I want a crisp, modern look or when the tile doesn’t offer a bullnose option. Bullnose works best in softer, more traditional, or transitional spaces where you want a seamless, blended feel.

Both can look beautiful when done thoughtfully. The right choice depends on your style, your space, and how you want the finished design to feel.

Designer Tip: If you’re using Schluter, match the finish to your plumbing fixtures or cabinet hardware for a cohesive, finished look. It’s one of those small details that makes a space feel pulled together and intentional.
