MDW: The Kickoff to Summer
Summer always sneaks up on me — but as both an interior designer and a mom, I’ve learned that a little early prep can make the season smoother, more beautiful, and a lot more fun.
At home, I start by lightening things up — literally. I swap heavy throws and darker accents for airy linens, breezy fabrics, and cheerful florals - I am looking at you, my beautiful TJ weekly arrangements! It's amazing what a difference it makes when your home feels like it can breathe again. I also bring in natural textures like rattan, jute, and woven baskets to give our spaces that relaxed, effortless summer vibe.
As a mom, I’m also thinking about function. Summer means kids are home more, and spaces need to work a little harder. I create small zones for crafts, quiet time, and outdoor play — and I make sure there’s plenty of easy-to-access storage for the inevitable chaos of sunscreen, towels, and popsicle sticks.
Outdoor spaces get extra attention too. I treat our patio or backyard like another room — adding comfy seating, fun textiles, and ambient lighting for those long evenings outside. It's not just for clients; I want my own family to feel like our home is a summer retreat.
Designing for the season isn't just about looks — it's about supporting the way we live. For me, preparing for summer means creating spaces that invite ease, joy, and a little bit of magic — for my clients and for my family.
