What Clients Are Always Surprised By During the Design Process

When clients first begin their interior design journey, there’s a shared sense of excitement - fresh ideas, beautiful inspiration, and the anticipation of seeing their home come together in a way that feels both elevated and deeply personal.

But behind every finished space is a process that is far more layered, detailed, and intentional than most expect.

Over the years, I’ve found that there are a few key moments in the design process that tend to surprise clients the most. Today, I’m pulling back the curtain on what really goes into bringing a thoughtfully curated space to life.

It’s Not Just About “Picking Pretty Things”

One of the biggest misconceptions is that interior design is simply selecting furniture and finishes. While that’s certainly part of it, the foundation of every project is strategy. Before a single piece is sourced, we’re thinking through:

  • How the space will function day-to-day

  • Traffic flow and layout optimization

  • Storage needs (especially for busy families)

  • How each room connects and flows to the next

At the end of the day, designing a home is about story telling - the story of your family, your lifestyle, and your dreams. Every decision is made with intention, ensuring that the space not only looks beautiful - but shares your families own unique journey.

Sourcing Is actually a Full-Time Job (On Its Own)

This is the moment where clients’ eyes usually widen a bit. Sourcing isn’t just finding a light fixture or a sofa or just hitting “check-out” on a website. It’s:

  • Reviewing hundreds of options across our network of trusted vendors

  • Confirming dimensions, finishes, and scale - numerous times to ensure the perfect fits

  • Checking stock availability and lead times, to keep the project moving forward

  • Comparing pricing and quality because yes, the internet is selling “the same thing” for cheaper and offering free shipping but is it “actually the same thing” or a dupe that you’re being scammed

  • Ordering samples lots and lots of samples and reviewing them in person

And that’s before anything is even purchased.

Each selection is carefully vetted to ensure it aligns with the overall vision, budget, and timeline. It’s a level of detail that often goes unseen - but makes all the difference in the final result.

Procurement Is a Process, Not a Click

Once selections are approved, the next phase begins: procurement.

Clients are often surprised to learn how involved this stage really is. It includes:

  • Creating and managing purchase orders

  • Coordinating with multiple vendors

  • Tracking shipments and monitoring timelines

  • Working with receivers to inspect items upon arrival

  • Handling damages, delays, or claims when needed

It’s not as simple as placing an order and waiting for it to arrive. There are many moving parts, and managing them properly is what keeps a project running smoothly.

Timelines Require Patience

In a world of fast shipping and instant gratification, design timelines can feel longer than expected.

A single room can take several months to complete and for good reason. Custom pieces, made-to-order furnishings, and high-quality materials all require time. Isn’t that why a designer is hired in the first place?

Add in:

  • Vendor production schedules

  • Shipping and freight coordination

  • Installation scheduling

…and it becomes clear why “good design takes time.”

The end result is always worth the wait, but understanding this upfront helps set realistic expectations from the start.

The Small Details Make the Biggest Impact

Clients often expect the big pieces - sofas, tables, cabinetry - to define the space.

But what truly brings a home to life are the finishing layers:

  • Styling and accessories

  • Textiles and soft goods

  • Lighting adjustments

  • Artwork and personal touches

These are the elements that transform a space from “designed” to “complete.” It’s where personality comes in, and where the home begins to tell your story.

There’s a Lot Happening Behind the Scenes

Perhaps the biggest surprise of all is how much happens that clients never actually see.

From emails and vendor calls to site visits, revisions, and problem-solving in real time - there are hours of work dedicated to ensuring everything feels seamless on the client side.

Our goal is always to create an experience that feels organized, thoughtful, and elevated… even when we’re managing a hundred moving pieces behind the scenes.

If you’ve been thinking about starting a project, this is your reminder that you don’t have to navigate it alone.
