Back to School & a New Routine
As both a mom and an interior designer, I know how quickly the first week of school can fly by. The rush of new routines, school supplies, and the excitement (and nerves!) of a fresh start often leaves our homes buzzing with activity. Now that we’ve made it through week one, it’s the perfect time to pause, catch our breath, and create spaces that support calm, focus, and a little inspiration for the year ahead.
1. Create a Homework-Friendly Zone
Kids thrive with consistency, and having a designated spot for schoolwork helps them focus. It doesn’t need to be a full office—sometimes a small desk in the corner or even a styled nook at the kitchen table does the trick. Add good lighting, comfortable seating, and a basket with essentials (pencils, scissors, crayons) so everything’s within reach.
2. Organize the Drop Zone
Backpacks, shoes, and lunchboxes have a funny way of exploding across the floor after school. If you don’t already have a “drop zone,” now’s the time to create one. Think hooks at kid height, cubbies or baskets for shoes, and a tray for papers that need mom’s attention. Even a small wall by the door can be transformed into a mini-mudroom with the right organization.
3. Streamline Mornings with Smart Storage
We all know the chaos of searching for missing shoes or that favorite shirt at 7:15 AM. Simplify mornings by creating a weekly outfit station for your kids—five bins, one for each school day. Add a snack drawer or bin in the pantry so kids can help pack lunches. A little prep goes a long way toward fewer tears (from both kids and parents!).
4. Add a Touch of Fun
School days can feel long, so build in a little joy at home. A chalkboard wall for doodles and reminders, a colorful calendar, or even a cozy reading corner can make after-school routines something to look forward to. I love weaving in cheerful colors and textures that inspire both learning and play.
5. Don’t Forget Mom’s Corner
Back-to-school prep isn’t just about the kids. Moms need a command center too—whether that’s a pretty planner on the counter, a family calendar on the wall, or a styled desktop to keep things running smoothly. When the home feels ordered and intentional, it creates breathing room for everyone.
As a mom, I get it—the back-to-school season can feel overwhelming. But as a designer, I believe that small changes in our homes can make a big difference in how we experience daily life. Here’s to a fresh start, smoother routines, and spaces that support us all year long!
