Red, White, and Blue: Prepping for Patriotic Holidays

As an interior designer, I love finding ways to celebrate the seasons — and patriotic holidays are some of my favorites. Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and even Labor Day give me a chance to play with bold colors and nostalgic details, all while creating spaces that feel festive and thoughtfully styled.

When I prep a home for these summer celebrations, I always start with the classics: red, white, and blue. But instead of going all-in on saturated tones, I tend to soften the palette. Think washed-out denim blues, creamy whites, and vintage reds. These hues add charm and warmth without overwhelming the space.

Textiles are my go-to for quick, impactful updates. I’ll often swap in striped throw pillows, a star-print blanket on the porch chairs, or a cheerful floral arrangement that nods to the flag without being too literal. It’s all about layering patterns and textures in a way that feels curated, not kitschy.

For me, prepping for patriotic holidays is more than just decorating — it’s about creating an environment where people can gather, connect, and feel a sense of pride and comfort. Red, white, and blue never go out of style when they’re used with care and creativity.
