What to Prioritize First When Designing a Family Home
The design process is one of the most important parts of the overall success of any interior design project. It is the roadmap that takes a client from onboarding day to finally walking into a room that feels even better than they imagined.
At CRD&CO., one of the very first things I prioritize when designing a family home is the inspiration stage.
Before we begin sourcing furniture, selecting finishes, or finalizing layouts, we spend intentional time exploring inspiration together. This often looks like thumbing through my portfolio, scrolling Pinterest and Instagram, saving screenshots, and diving into the world of thoughtfully designed interiors. While it may seem simple on the surface, this stage creates the foundation for everything that follows.
More importantly, it shifts a client’s mindset from “This is something I want to do someday” to “This is really happening.”
During our kickoff meetings, we spend a lot of time discussing the details within inspiration images. It is rarely as simple as loving or disliking an entire room. Instead, the conversations sound more like:
“I love the layout in this photo, but not the colors.”
“The sofa is beautiful, but I wouldn’t want the rest of the room to feel this formal.”
“This kitchen feels warm and inviting.”
“I’m drawn to how relaxed this space feels.”
Those small observations are where the real clarity begins to happen.
These conversations also give me a much deeper understanding of how a client views design and functionality within their everyday life. I pay attention to more than just the words being said. Facial expressions, body language, hesitation, excitement — it all matters. Sometimes a client says they love something, but their reaction tells a completely different story. Those subtle moments help guide the direction of the project in such an intentional way.
Clients often do not realize that these early inspiration conversations are quietly shaping every future design decision. They help establish the overall feeling of the home, the functionality priorities for the family, and the emotional connection we want the space to create.
Before a single furnishing order is placed or a paint color is selected, clarity and connection come first. It’s what makes the final outcome feel so personal, thoughtful, and elevated in the end.
