Sourcing Corner: Shelfie Accessories

As an interior designer, one of the most rewarding parts of a project is getting to the finishing line — and shelf styling is one of my favorites. It’s where personality and design truly come together. Shelves aren’t just for storage; they’re an opportunity to showcase your style, tell your story, and bring warmth and depth into your space.

A well-styled shelf feels effortless, but there’s intention behind every piece. I always start with a clean slate and consider how I want the space to feel — inviting, modern, collected, or cozy. Then I begin layering. I love combining books, decorative objects, artwork, and natural elements. Mixing textures and materials — like wood, ceramic, metal, and glass — adds visual interest and keeps the eye moving.

Grouping items in odd numbers is a go-to design rule, and varying heights helps build dimension. I often use a stack of books as a pedestal for a smaller object or layer framed art behind accessories to add depth. Don't be afraid of negative space — every shelf doesn’t need to be packed. Sometimes the most impactful arrangements are the simplest.

But more than anything, I encourage clients to incorporate personal pieces. That’s where the magic happens. A bowl collected on vacation, a framed family photo, or a sentimental object can turn a shelf from just pretty to truly meaningful. These elements are what make a house feel like home.

So if you’re looking to refresh a space, start with your shelves. Clear them off, gather items you love, and play. Great styling takes time, but when done right, it can completely transform the look and feel of a room. And remember — your shelves can evolve as you do.
