The Pretty Part vs. The Actual Part
There’s the pretty part of interior design.
The perfectly styled room. The pillows fluffed just right. Fresh flowers on the counter. The photographer finding the perfect angle while we move a lamp two inches to the left.
And then there’s the actual part.
The construction dust. The samples covering every surface. The decisions that lead to more decisions. The emails, site visits, measurements, contractor questions, last-minute pivots and problem-solving happening behind the scenes.
The Peacock Project had plenty of both.
BEFORE: A House With Good Bones
The Peacock Project began with a classic Tudor-style home tucked into the wooded suburbs of Warren, New Jersey.
It had character. It had space. It had really good bones.
But inside, much of the home still reflected its traditional 1990s roots, and our clients were ready to make it feel more like them.
The goal was never to strip away the personality of the house. We wanted to respect what was already there while creating something warmer, fresher, and more personal.
We used a predominantly neutral palette as our foundation, then layered in color, pattern, texture, and bolder moments throughout. We also incorporated thoughtful details that reflected our clients’ family and culture.
The result feels collected rather than decorated.
THE ACTUAL PART: Where the Design Really Happens
Before a project becomes portfolio-worthy, there is a very unglamorous middle.
And that’s actually where the best design happens.
A renovation isn’t one big decision. It’s hundreds of small ones that eventually become one cohesive home.
It’s choosing a material and considering how it relates to the next room. Looking at paint in different light. Thinking about sightlines. Deciding where to make a statement and where to let the design quietly fall into the background.
And sometimes it’s standing on a job site when something didn't go according to plan and figuring out the best way forward.
That is the actual part.
The part you don't see in the finished photos.
THE PRETTY PART
Then one day, the dust is gone.
The lighting is installed. The hardware is on. The furniture arrives. We style the shelves, bring in the final layers, and suddenly all of those little decisions start speaking to each other.
That’s the magic of the finished Peacock Project.
The neutral foundation allowed us to create moments of personality without overwhelming the home. Color appears where it matters. Pattern adds interest. Natural textures soften the spaces. Bold details give individual rooms their own identity.
And when you look at the before and after, that is the transformation I notice most.
It isn't simply that the rooms look better.
The house finally feels like the people who live there.
THE PART YOU DON'T SEE
We love a dramatic before-and-after as much as anyone, but the “after” only exists because of everything that happened in between.
The meetings. The drawings. The samples. The selections. The communication between designer, client, contractor and vendors. And plenty of problem-solving no one ever sees.
That’s why full-service interior design is about so much more than choosing beautiful things.
Our job is to hold onto the vision while navigating all of the details required to get there.
Our clients get to live in the pretty part. We handle the actual part.
And The Peacock Project is one of my favorite reminders that you can't have one without the other.
